Uig Harbour Redevelopment Project
Caledonian Maritime Assets Limited (CMAL) are constructing a new 102 metre dual fuel vessel to serve the Skye Triangle route. As a result, infrastructure improvements are needed at the 3 ports which serve the Skye Triangle route to optimise operations.
The ferry has been designed to operate from the existing 3 ports:
- Uig (owned by Highland Council)
- Lochmaddy (owned by Comhairle nan Eilean Siar)
- Tarbert (Harris) (owned by CMAL)
A series of public meetings to update the communities on the design and build of the new dual fuel vessel and to discuss harbour infrastructure have taken place over the last 3 years:
- Public meeting April 2017
- Pre-application consultation meetings September 2017, February 2018 and September 2018 and community engagement event meetings April 2019 and November 2019 - providing information on the proposals for all 3 harbours. Information was displayed to the public and members of the design and environmental teams for the three developments were present to discuss the proposals
Details of the events, proposed plans and project updates are available on CMAL's website.
Consultation meetings were also held at Uig with Uig harbour users, community council and Community Trust groups on:
- 2 October 2017
- 26 October 2017
- 17 January 2018
The consultation gave community and harbour users the opportunity to discuss the proposed work and give us feedback.
An Uig Development Brief has also been developed by our planning and development team to provide a structured framework for guiding the physical development and transformation of the area over the next 20 years. The Uig Development Brief was formally adopted as statutory Supplementary Guidance to the Council's Development Plan at the Isle of Skye and Raasay Committee on 3 June 2019. Consultation on the brief took place with public meetings in Uig in October 2017 and September 2018 and the consultation on the draft brief ran for 8 weeks between 30 July to 21 September 2018. The brief forms a material consideration in the determination of planning applications and an important framework for coordinating investment decisions.
The infrastructure improvements at Uig Harbour are detailed on the masterplan layout and the proposed works which will be dependent on obtaining funding include:
- Widening and strengthening of existing berthing structure
- New lifting dolphins for new linkspan
- Relocated waiting shelter
- New covered passenger walkway shelter
- Widening of existing approachway
- Reinstatement of boat steps
- Extended marshalling area with reclamation from the sea with imported rock fill, rock armour, paving, lighting, drainage, road markings and other ancillary works.
- New marshalling area to include relocation of fishermen's compound area and relocation of dry berth area with new sheet pile wall
- New ticket office
- Design and provision of new pier and approachway widening fendering system supported on fender piles and steelwork
- Design and provision of cathodic protection system to steelwork
- Provision of upgraded electrical and water services to support ferry and harbour user operations
- Concrete repairs to existing pier head and approachway structure
The new vessel is due to come into service in the first half of 2023 and the consenting process for the proposed works with Marine Scotland for the Marine Licences and Transport Scotland for the Harbour Revision Order (HRO) has been completed and formal consent has been confirmed and the decision notices can be viewed at the links below with related documentation
